Matthew Zucker
Matthew Zucker is a rare book dealer, collector, and publisher of books and editions by contemporary artists. He carries on a family tradition in the book trade begun by his grandfather, Irving Zucker, who founded Zucker Art Books in New York in 1940.
Joining the firm in 2001, Matthew began collecting nature printing and works by Dieter Roth. This led to a two-gallery Dieter Roth exhibition and the publication of Dieter Roth in Print: Artists’ Books, both in 2006.
With one foot anchored in antiquarian books, he stepped with the other into publishing commissioned projects, the first with Louise Bourgeois in 2007, followed by Doug and Mike Starn, Josh Smith, Jenny Holzer, Philip Taaffe, Pia Camil, and Adam Pendleton. In 2017 he moved his business and family from New York City to Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where he is now based.
A specialist in the visual art world, mostly historical books by artists, printers, naturalists, and scientists, Matthew has fulfilled acquisition requests for major institutions, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University, the Museum of Modern Art, the Getty Research Institute, Harvard University, and the New York Public Library. He maintains the foremost collection of Dieter Roth’s oeuvre in America and has worked with and curated private collections of Roth’s work.
His collection of nature printing, spanning 1733 to 1902, is one of the finest ever assembled: more than 13,000 images across 130 rare and seminal works, including journals, published books, unique manuscripts, American currency, and instructional texts. He has created exhibitions around the collection, and it is documented in his book Capturing Nature (2022), one of the Best Dutch Book Designs, which brings little-known history to light and translates texts into English for the first time. He has also taught the subject through workshops in Singapore and Oxford.
Guided by an expert eye, Matthew continues to pursue his passions, making discoveries through constant learning and looking.
