28 original mounted photographic prints. Edges rubbed, front hinge starting, non-authorial gift inscription (dated 1869), copious foxing (not affecting the images), but a near-fine copy. First Edition. The author, an Oxford historian, had been introduced to mountaineering by Virginia Woolf's father, Leslie Stephen, and was the founder and first editor of The Alpine Journal. He produced this classic book in support of the theories of glacial movement propounded by John Tyndall. The splendid original photographic illustrations include 17 in the text and 11 mounted on separate leaves with tissue guards. The photographer, Ernest Edwards, was well-known for his landscapes and portraits, and he contributes an entertaining appendix on the difficulties of making wet-collodion photographs amid the high peaks of Switzerland.
