Gerhard Richter - Atlas van de foto's en schetsen. Utrecht: Hedendaagse Kunst - 1972

First edition. This artists' book, designed and edited by Richter, marked the first publication of his Atlas project. It accompanied the first independent exhibition of Atlas which was shown at Hedendaagse Kunst, Utrecht. He has since continued to re-work and re-publish it to this day, the complete work was acquired by the Lenbachhaus Gallery, Munich in 1996. Richter began collecting these images shortly after he arrived in the West from East Germany in 1961, they include both his own private photographs and drawings and others taken from newspapers and books. Atlas is his attempt to categorize and clarify the collection by mounting the images on cardboard panels and grouping them by theme in relation to his work and their use as source material for his paintings. As well as giving an insight into his working practice it also provides a reflection of recent German history. Scarce with text page inside
